What is a Demon? Simply put, a Demon is… well, a Demon. However, you can be so creative with this question that your definition of a Demon may vary greatly from ours. For our purposes, a Demon is any being (especially a male) that is half man, half animal, possessed of great psionic powers, demon-like in personality, alignment, disposition, and behavior, often evil, malevolent, and full of rage.
What is more interesting is that many believe there are many different types of demons – all beings with entirely different characteristics. But there are some common characteristics shared by all demons, which include the ability to inflict pain and suffering, as well as the ability to take over another being (particularly another human) and take over their mind, forcing their will to obey. It is these characteristics that make for fascinating stories, legends, films, books, comics, and of course, games.
Now, there are two types of demons, those of the lower nature and those of the higher nature. Lower demons are beings that simply attempt to ruin the lives of those around them and do not necessarily gain complete control over them. Examples of lower demons are beings such as werewolves, vampires, werewolves in modern times, succubuses, zombies, and some lesser demons. On the other hand, higher demons are beings like Archangels, archdemons, archbishops, chaotics, cherubs, cherubim, Leviathan, minstrels, and vassago. These higher demons are said to have full control over themselves, as well as an unlimited amount of power. They are the absolute rulers of demonic realms and are sometimes said to be the reason why humans have wars and conflict.
There has been much speculation on the exact origins of demons. The most prevalent theory on this matter states that the first demons were created when Lucifer became corrupted by an angel and went on a rampage, slaughtering innocent humans in what would become the first sin. This sin would later cause the fall of Lucifer, turning him into a fallen angel and creating the now infamous demon and fallen demon, the fallen angels. Lucifer’s rage caused the creation of seven archangels who were his closest companions during his time ofrule, these archangels are believed to be the cause of the division between good and evil in the middle ages, leading to the need for a demonic force to oppose them.
But according to Christian views, it is impossible to explain how demons gain physical forms, as we are not speaking about animated creatures here. However, there is something called demonic possession in both Christianity and Judaism, which gives some credence to the idea that there could be a link between spiritual warfare and possession. For instance, while the practice of satanic sacrifice is condemned by most religions as a form of satanical warfare, it is used by Christians as a symbol of acceptance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, to appease God.
When we look at the concept of demonic possession, it can be said that, when humans turn against their Maker, they actually become demons themselves, driven to carry out the will of their evil master. As their will is distorted by their own beliefs, their ability to think properly is also impaired, so that instead of thinking straight, they succumb to their darker impulses and become possessed. There are stories of lost souls searching for their place in heaven, only to find their bodies possessed by demons, so that they do not fit in. So while it is not possible to explain exactly how demons gain physical forms, it can be safely assumed that, when humans rebel against their Maker, they actually do so against their will and so become possessed by the demons they oppose.
